Pearls buying right

With a wide variety in price, colours, sizes, how does one choose one to suit them? Here are a few pointers that we hope you use when shopping next time-

One should take their time and be totally sure while selecting a suitable pearl, and preferably make their purchases from a reputable jeweller.

Since pearls have overtones like pinks, greens, etc. one should preferably pick the pearls that complement their complexion and hair colour, bringing out the most in the pearl and the wearer. For example creme rose and pinkish colour pearls will suit pale skin complexion and blonde hair. Off white and creme coloured pearls will bring out the best in persons with dark skin and brunette hair.

Other important factors that should be considered while buying pearls are:

Luckily pearls give you a range of colours to choose from. The most prized shades being white, black, rose, and cream. Unflattering overtones of green and brown should be avoided.

The most highly prized pearls are spherical. When a pearl that has been cut from the shell presents a hemispherical surface, it is sometimes called a bouton pearl. If a solid pearl has an irregular shape, having grown over a rough object, it is known as a baroque pearl. In the jewellery trade, pearls are commonly known as pear, bell, or drop, according to the shape. Fine quality pearls are perfect rounds and therefore are much more expensive. Very slight off-round pearls are also preferred.

This is a very serious factor, as at times one is faced with the dilemma of choosing between a large lower quality pearl and a smaller but higher quality pearl. So what should one do? As with diamonds, even with pearls, quality should be given preference to quantity. If necessary, compromise on the colour and colour, but never on quality. Generally, the larger the size of the pearl, the more expensive it gets.

The shine or glow on the surface of the pearl is known as lustre. Fine quality pearls have a deep and a shiny lustre and this depends upon the thickness of the nacre on the pearl.

Very few pearls are blemish free, so these can be overlooked, but severe flaws like cracks, over growths on the skin and deep holes should be avoided.

In selecting pearls to wear or give as a gift, it's important to consider the recipient's skin tone.

Pink pearls complement fair complexions

Golden-coloured pearls flatter olive-toned skin.
