Choosing the right ring

Please help her pick it. It helps to learn about the components that make up a ring but even a jewellery expert will not be able to pick out what she really wants.

Think first before presenting her with a family heirloom ring. Ask her first. She may not like your grandmothers taste. Unless the diamond is one to be talked about, let your bride-to-be choose her own. Even if she likes the family diamond you could always replace the setting to her choice.

Listen for subtle clues. If she is talking to her mates and suddenly starts talking about platinum; don't assume its her Credit card she is talking about.

Look at your loved ones fingers. If she has tiny fingers, a large, heavy ring would look awful. A thin and tiny setting on a large hand will look just as bad.

What metal should the ring be? There is a choice between gold and platinum. Platinum is becoming more popular as it is a hard wearing metal. If you are choosing a claw setting, platinum claws are the strongest. It looks like white gold but it is much heavier. Also platinum is white so it shows off a colourless diamond to its best advantage.

A couple of beautiful side stones can make your diamond look even better. You can choose from either round, triangular or a baguette (rectangle) shape. There are even settings with elaborate scrolls or shoulders with geometric shapes and these even could be diamond set.

It may take a little more time and patience to choose the right ring but your wife-to-be will love you for it.
