Any
piece of jewellery, whether it's an engagement ring costing thousands,
a family heirloom or a sentimental piece of costume jewellery
will last for many years if it is properly cared for. The cleaning
and storing of your favourite piece of jewellery will not only
add years of life to it but will save in repair costs and the
heartache of throwing away a treasured piece of jewellery.

Even though you may wear your diamond rings all day every day,
you should still give thought to its care.
Do not wear your diamond when doing rough work. Even though your
diamond is very hear, it can be chipped by a hard blow.
When you are not wearing diamonds, they still need attention.
Keep your precious pieces in a lined jewellery box or wrapped
individually in tissue paper. Do not jumble then together as even
diamonds can scratch each other.
Diamonds get smudged, soiled and dusty. Lotions, powders, soaps
and even natural skin oils can affect a diamonds brilliance even
chemicals in the air can discolour the setting. It just takes
a little care to keep them clean.
1/
Mix a half and half solution of cold water and household ammonia
in a small bowl. Soak the piece for 30 minutes then use a small
brush to dislodge any dirt behind the stone and within the setting.
Lift out and rinse well. Pat dry with some kitchen towel.
2/
Buy one of the brand name liquid jewellery cleaners and follow
the manufacturers instructions. Do not touch clean diamonds with
your fingers.

The same advice for coloured gemstones is basically the same for
diamonds. DO NOT attempt to clean any gemstone using ammonia.
They are several coloured gemstones that should NEVER be immersed
in any cleaning solution. Your local jeweller is an expert and
can advise you on your particular coloured gemstone.
For specific gemstones read our comprehensive guide.
